چکیده

In a study of human yawning Robert Provine (1986) remarked that yawning is a prominent stereotyped action pattem and releasing stimulus which “does not deserve its current status as a minor behavioural curiosity”. Indeed, “yawning may have the dubious distinction of being the least understood, common, human behaviour”. In contrast, a large body of experimental data has been collected during the past 30 years on drug-induced yawning in animals (particularly rodents). In this chapter we consider the neural basis of drug-induced yawning in rodents and discuss the relevance of this pharmacological phenomenon to “spontaneous” yawning in animals and man.

بررسی میزان خمیازه ناشی از بروموکریپتین در موش های صحرایی کلستاتیک

The purpose of this study was investigation of effect of cholestasis on bromocriptine-induced yawning in male rats. Bromocriptine, the agonist of dopamine receptors (especially "D2"), causes yawning in male intact rats. In the present study, cholestasis was produced in male rats by surgery and ligation of common bile duct. The number of yawning induced by intraperitoneal injection of bromocript...

Turmeric active substance, curcumin, enhanced apomorphine-induced yawning in rats

Objective: Curcumin is a major constituent of turmeric and influences many functions of the brain. In the present study, we investigated the effect of curcumin on yawning induced by apomorphine in rats. Materials and Methods: Curcumin administered orallyfor 10 consecutive days. Yawning was induced by subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of apomorphine (a dopamine receptor agonist) and the number of ya...

A Neural Basis for Contagious Yawning

Contagious yawning, in which yawning is triggered involuntarily when we observe another person yawn, is a common form of echophenomena-the automatic imitation of another's words (echolalia) or actions (echopraxia) [1]. The neural basis for echophenomena is unknown; however, it has been proposed that it is linked to disinhibition of the human mirror-neuron system [1-4] and hyper-excitability of ...

Role of the adrenergic system in physostigmine-induced yawning

In this study the effect of adrenergic receptor agonists and antagonists on physostigmine induced yawning was investigated. Intraperitoneal injection of different doses of physostigmine (0.03, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mg/kg) caused yawning in white rats. The greatest response was seen at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg physostigmine. Phenylephrine, an α1 agonist, and clonidine, an α2 agonist, led to a decrease in...

The effects of crocin and safranal on the yawning induced by intracerebroventricular injection of histamine in rats

Objective: Crocin and safranal, as the major constituents of saffron, have many biological activities. This study investigated the effects of crocin and safranal on yawning response induced by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of histamine in rats. Materials and Methods: In ketamine/xylazine-anesthetized rats, a guide cannula was implanted in the right ventricle of the brain and yawnin...
